Advanced "Floating": Introduction

Before we start getting our hands dirty in rug maze making and landscape sculpting we need to cover the basics of "Floating". Basically, we need to answer the following questions:

  • What is 'Floating'?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the common tools for floating?
  • What can you do with Floating? (Examples)

What is 'Floating'?

'Floating' is a glitch in the game that allows you to move and place objects in places that they aren't normally allowed to be in. Some players have taken this to another level by making rug-bridges and pathways going beyond the limits of the house. 'Floating' is key in making your house unique and adds flavor to the average room. 'Floating' is a tool that housing fanatics should learn as it opens up many, many, MANY doors on decorating.

How does it work?
To "float" you must have basic understanding of the mechanics in your house. Some areas in your house you cannot cross or enter even if you float, making it a waste of your time. Basic floating is taking a large or long platform or rug and attaching it to a shorter/smaller rug and moving the small one so that the larger one is moving with it. This is better explained by Kevin Battleblood. Also, if you have something floating up above, and you place an object directly below it, and move the lower object the thing above will most likely move with it.

What are the common tools for 'Floating'?
There are several housing items that I like to call my "tools" for successfully floating an object without any major problems. I'll just list these tools because anything more will be too complicated:

The Crate: I think this is the second best tool for floating upwards. I like to use crates as measurements of height in Wizard101 in the houses. I'd always say "this thing is 3 crates tall" or something like that so I know how many crates I need to reach the top of it. You can use crates to stack on rugs and create an "elevator" to reach to the top of a waterfall or scale a mountain side. Make sure that you do NOT get a "Reinforced Crate" as this will not stack and go together like the others. Always get something that says Crate of _____, except for the Crate of Chickens of course. A little tip for trying to climb upwards is that the climbing limit is 3 crates high. What I mean by this is that if you create a tower of crates with rugs sticking out so you can climb it there can be a maximum of 3 crates in between the rugs, if not then you will not climb up onto the next rug. A picture is worth a thousand words:

The Platforms and Flowers: I like to use these guys for decorating purposes. Who wouldn't want a floating flower trail or a floor completely covered in flowers? I also have grown (see what I did there? :P) to love the Flat Wooden Platform. Sure, it's a glorified watchtower rug, but I like it! It's the biggest float-able item that you can put other items on (at least in my book). To say that these are helpful is an understatement. They are accessible from almost anywhere, they don't cost that much, and they look pretty awesome! You can use wooden platforms for almost every housing job/design you can think of! They are there to help us and just to make it look pretty ;). I have seen some people use these items to build giant fortresses and buildings from scratch, and I think that's pretty amazing.

The Rugs: Now comes the most important tool of them all. RUGS. They are just awesome. They're the very foundation of floating. You must be able to attach the rug onto something and move the smaller rug. You can do almost ANYTHING with rugs, it's mind blowing. There's not much to say or I would be repeating myself over and over. Also, check out Kevin Battleblood's blog for more info on "shadowing" and how to retrieve stray rugs.

What can you do with 'Floating'?

Here are some examples:

Please comment if you have any questions, or concerns on how to build/float something and I'll try to answer you as fast as possible!

My Spiral Mission: Protector of the Lore [Chapter 9]

New Home

“The what!?” He yelled wide-eyed staring disbelievingly at Angel while the older man just chuckled and patted Jeremy’s shoulder.

“You heard right, I don’t think I need to repeat myself,” Angel said, walking out of the room and signaled Jeremy to follow him.

“Hey Gramps,” Matt shouted “I’m going to be in the lunch room with the rest, okay?” Angel looked at his grandson before giving a nod and a slight smirk.

Jeremy and Angel just stood there in silence with the occasional sound of shooting stars and machine work.  Jeremy, still looking around the space like building around him before his focus went back to the silver haired man standing right next to him. “Why am I here?” he finally blurted out. Angel casually turned his head to look at Jeremy, he noticed the anxiety and worry in his eyes. Angel closed his eyes and took a deep breath and when he exhaled a few snowflakes and some glowing sparkles flew out. He looked back at Jeremy before running a hand through his silver hair trying to think of where to start. Although Angel is 168 years old he still looks and acts like young adult.

“Well,” Angel started “Central City was attacked…” he looked at Jeremy with a serious face waiting for his reaction. No, no, my friends, my teachers…. my home was all that rang through his head. Jeremy stepped a few feet backwards as he gaped at Angel, his legs threatening to give from shock. He backed into the wall with a small gasp and slid down it and sat pulling his legs towards his chest. He could feel his whole body shaking while memories with his friends and his home were flashing before his eyes and thinking how all that could be taken away from him.

“Jeremy?” …. “Jeremy!”  … “It’s ok Jeremy, your friends are safe.” He crouched down beside Jeremy.

“How do you know!” Jeremy growled and shot him glare.

“Trust me,”  He gave a warm smile that a father would give to his loving son and put a hand on his shoulder.

“W-what about t-the others?” Jeremy asked looking away.

“We’ve gotten the report that the Union Army has rescued most of their citizens from harm’s way.”

“So,” he started “who or what attacked Central City?”

“We don’t really know, they were covered with some sort of shadow cloak. They gave the appearance of black smoke clouds or something.”

“Oh..”

“Yea, it was weir- oh hey Piggly, hey Chico!” Angel yelled as two people approached them. One was a very short man wearing a white lab coat and silver mop top haircut. What was weird about him is he had orange knee socks. The other was a little taller and he had a gray human suit thing with a red shirt on the inside. The one with the gray suit a pig snout- WHAT?- Jeremy stared at the pig snout for what seemed like 10 minutes.

“Uh, why is he staring at me Angel?” Jeremy snapped out of his daze and looked at Angel. “Nevermind- you called?”

“Thanks for coming guys,” Angel grinned “I need one of you to be his partner in the P.E.T. program.”

“What’s the P.E.T. program?” Jeremy asked.

“It’s the Psyche Extension Terminal program. Basically, you will be like a partner and you can speak telepathically and stuff.” Angel explained.

“Oh, I get it… sort of” Angel sighed and took out something that looked like a muffin. “Where did you get the muffin?”

“Muffin? What are you talking about this is an ‘ugly cupcake’. Anyways,” Angel took a bite out of it ,”Piggly, can you be his PET?”

“Ok, Angel!” Piggly snorted and snapped his fingers. He flashed and turned into a little Piggle. Jeremy went wide-eyed before uttering “awesomeness!”  and Piggly landed on his shoulder. Jeremy, can ya hear me now? Jeremy nodded a little freaked out by having a flying piece of ham talk to him telepathically but it was cool.

“Now that we’ve got that settled let’s go to the lunch room I’m starving!” Angel yelled and they all dashed towards the giant building. Once they opened the giant doors they were filled with a very mouthwatering aroma.

“Mmmm, what’s cooking.” Jeremy asked while Angel just simply answered, “popcorn.”

The Tale of Young Bluebart.

A little side-story to keep you all entertained on a Monday.

Deep beneath the waves there lies a nasty pirate with rotted skin and a patch over one of his eyes. To think that this creature ever had a wife would be unimaginable but he did. Bluebart had one child, a girl, well, if you could call her that. This child’s name was Kathyui of the Ocean. Her mother was part troll so this girl was not very beautiful and her manners lacked a little but overall she was a very kind and gentle girl. One day, she was walking along the bottom of the ocean when she spotted a young wizard about her age swimming to Calypso’s Lair. She hid behind some sea grass to observe this strange creature she hasn’t seen before.  She watched as this wizard called his friends and they battled the queen of the ocean and come out victorious. She gave a little gasp when he smiled and she felt her heart flutter, but when he turned to see where the noise came from she scurried away back to her cave thinking that her looks would scare the handsome wizard away. When she heard the wizard swimming by she followed always out of sight but able to track the young wizard all the way back to Wizard City. She made sure not be seen by anyone as she was surrounded by beautiful humans like that young wizard. She wandered about Wizard City searching for the wizard that almost spotted her. She finally spotted him in a place called “Firecat Alley.” She climbed onto one of the roofs to watch him quest along with his friends when she slipped and fell.
“What is that?” One of his friends said.
“Is that a troll?” The other said. The guy in the middle, whom she has been following, said nothing he just stared.

“NO! Don’t look at me! I’m hideous!” She cried and ran for her life. She hid in an alley behind some garbage and hugged her knees. She heard some rustling some few feet away and peeked through a little crack of the garbage cans. She saw two little fire elves having a conversation.

“Yeah, that Bastilla is somethin’ else!” One of the elves said, “I asked her for some o’dat wizard clothes and she granted my wish. She knows some magicky spells that’ll do anythin’ you ask!”

Kathyui tuned everything else except for the location of such miracle worker. She ran for the tower that was just a jog away from where she was. She looked up at the tower and gulped then knocked on it.

“Come in my child,” a voice said as the door opened.  Kathyui stepped inside and the door slammed behind her. She whipped her head to see behind her and looked back to the front. As soon as the door closed the torches were lit up to reveal a banshee sitting on her desk and eating what looked like bats.

“A-are you B-Bastilla Gravewynd?” Kathyui choked out. The banshee in question chuckled and answered “Yes, yes, I am. Now, who are you and what do you need?”

“U-um, my name is Kathyui, a-and my father is Bluebart.” She said while finding the floor more interesting to look at, “and, I was wondering if you could make me beautiful so I can talk to this wizard guy a met.”

“Oh, how interesting.” Kathyui gave a weak smile.

“I want him to notice me and like me…”

“Hmm… The only way to get what you want, is to become human yourself.” Kathyui gasped.

“Can you do that?” Bastilla chucked and snapped her fingers and some instruments came alive.

“My dear, sweet child. That's what I do. It's what I live for. To help unfortunate folk, like yourself.
Poor souls with no one else to turn to.” With that last sentence the instruments started playing.

“I admit that in the past I've been a nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch
But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light, and made a switch
True? Yes.
And I fortunately know a little magic
It's a talent that I always have possessed
And dear lady, please don't laugh
I use it on behalf
Of the miserable, the lonely, and depressed (pathetic)

Poor unfortunate souls
In pain, in need
This one longing to be thinner
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them?
Yes, indeed
Those poor unfortunate souls
So sad, so true
They come flocking to my cauldron
Crying, "Spells, Bastilla, please!"
And I help them!
Yes I do

Now it's happened once or twice
Someone couldn't pay the price
And I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals
Yes I've had the odd complaint
But on the whole I've been a saint
To those poor unfortunate souls!
Have we got a deal?Bastilla said.

“But, if I become human I can never be with my father and mother again…” Kathyui muttered.

“But you'll have your man, heh heh. Life's full of tough choices, isn't it? Heh heh. Oh, and there is one more thing. We haven't discussed the subject of payment.

“But I don’t have any-“

“I’m not asking for much, just a token really a trifle,” Bastilla assured “What I want from you is… your kindness.”

“My kindness? What would you want with that? If I don’t have kindness how will I get along with him? I might not even be able to talk with him-” Kathyui  argued.

You'll have your looks, your pretty face.
And don't underestimate the importance of body language, ha!

The men up there don't like a lot of blabber
They think a girl who gossips is a bore!
Yet on land it's much prefered for ladies not to say a word
And after all dear, what is idle babble for?
Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who's withdrawn
It's she who holds her tongue who get's a man

Come on you poor unfortunate soul
Go ahead!
Make your choice!
I'm a very busy woman and I haven't got all day
It won't cost much
Just your kindness!
You poor unfortunate soul
It's sad but true
If you want to cross the bridge, my sweet
You've got the pay the toll
Take a gulp and take a breath
And go ahead and drink the bowl.
Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys
The boss is on a roll
This poor unfortunate soul

Beluga sevruga,
Come winds of the Celestian Sea
Larengix glaucitis
Et max laryngitis
La
Benevolentia to me!” Bastilla yelled and there appeared a bowl with a bottle of Lotus wings and a jar that said ‘Angel Dust’ then another that said ‘Kane of Ice’ when Bastilla poured all of the things in the bowl and it exploded in a cloud of smoke. “Now drink.”

Kathyui hesitated a little before taking the bowl drank the potion. Her green chapped and ugly skins was morphed into a nice peach color and her nappy brown hair flowed down to beautiful brown locks that turned blue in the moon light. Her green eyes turned white  like the white snow. Bastilla grabbed a small flask and held it up to Kathyui and from there a stream of gold mist from Kathyui went inside it.

“It was a pleasure doing business with you Kathyui.” Bastilla cackled and sent Kathyui to the commons. She landed on a novice wizard with a thud.

“Oh,, I’m sorry… wow you’re beautiful…” The novice gawked.

“Tsk, noob.” Kathyui went wide-eyed and covered her mouth. Why did I say that.

I was only trying to be nice, geez!” He yelled.

“Oh shut it and go back to your mom.” She said through her hand. Darn it! She ran until she couldn’t run no more and ended up somewhere with a sign that said, ‘The Arena.’

The End.
